The operation, promoted by the Cleanwave Foundation, Fòrum Veus Portocolom, the Grup Esportiu Rates-Pinyades and the Club Nàutic Portocolom, has made it possible to remove 587 kilos of waste and more than 1.300 cigarette butts from different points on the coast and the marine environment

Ports de les Illes Balears (PortsIB), a public entity dependent on the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle of the Government of the Balearic Islands, has collaborated in a community day of cleaning the coastline and seabed of the bay of Portocolom organized by the Cleanwave Foundation, Fòrum Veus Portocolom, the Grup Esportiu Rates-Pinyades and the Club Nàutic Portocolom, with the aim of contributing to the conservation of this coastal area and promoting environmental awareness.

The operation took place at various points around the bay and involved approximately 70 volunteers, who worked in a coordinated manner on cleanup tasks on land, the sea surface, and the seabed. Diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and support boats were mobilized, allowing work to be carried out in different areas with accumulated waste.

PortsIB has authorized the activity in the port area of ​​Portocolom, facilitating the implementation of an initiative aligned with the objectives of environmental protection and conservation of the marine environment promoted by the entity.

During the cleanup, a total of 587 kilograms of waste and 1.385 cigarette butts were removed. In the areas of Sa Bassa Nova and Sa Bateria, the main items found were cans, glass bottles, fishing debris, and other scattered waste. Among the larger items recovered were a 208-kilogram PVC pipe and 215 kilograms of fiberglass fragments from sunken or decomposed boats.

Likewise, a microplastic characterization was carried out on s'Arenal beach, which allowed the detection of a significant presence of rigid fragments, a reality that highlights the need to continue promoting conservation and awareness actions to reduce the impact of pollution on marine ecosystems.

The initiative also benefited from the collaboration of the Felanitx Town Council and various organizations and companies committed to environmental protection. The organizers highlighted the high level of participation and expressed their gratitude to all the volunteers who contributed to the event's success.

With this collaboration, PortsIB continues to support actions that promote the conservation of the coastline and encourage citizen participation in the care of the maritime and coastal spaces of the Balearic Islands.
