The Minister for the Sea and the Water Cycle outlines the actions promoted to strengthen coastal protection and advocates for "a more modern, sustainable port model adapted to the new challenges of the sector"

The Minister of the Sea and the Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, participated this Friday in the XX Symposium on Marinas, held in Palma, where he defended the new Ports Law of the Balearic Islands as a strategic tool to modernize the regional port system and respond to the current challenges of sustainability, competitiveness and protection of the marine environment.

During his presentation, entitled 'Protecting the Balearic Coastline: Deployment of the Surveillance and Cleaning Service in the Balearic Islands', Lafuente outlined the main initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle and Ports IB to strengthen the surveillance, conservation, and protection of the Balearic coastline. In this context, the Minister argued that the new Ports Law should become a key tool for adapting the port system to the sector's evolving needs and "moving towards a more efficient, modern model with greater legal certainty."

The councillor also stressed that the Balearic port system must continue to evolve towards a model that combines development, sustainability and protection of the marine environment, responding both to the needs of the nautical sector and to the environmental and territorial challenges of the Balearic Islands.

The 20th Symposium on Marinas brought together institutional representatives, port authority officials, experts, companies, and professionals linked to the maritime and port sector over two days to address the main challenges and opportunities facing the industry. The event included the participation of representatives from various autonomous communities, officials from state agencies, and professionals specializing in port management, innovation, and coastal protection.

During the conference, Lafuente presented the main initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle and Ports IB to strengthen the monitoring and conservation of the Balearic coastline. In this regard, he explained that the service has 22 vessels dedicated to monitoring, inspecting, and controlling coastal waters, as well as new technological resources that improve coordination and monitoring of the marine environment.

He also highlighted the deployment of the coastal cleaning service, made up of 23 boats distributed among the islands, with the aim of reinforcing the removal of waste and contributing to the preservation of the marine and coastal environment.

The Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle and Ports IB collaborated institutionally in holding this meeting, which has become one of the main forums for analysis and debate on the management of marinas and coastal areas.
