The planting and restoration of the Posidonia oceanica barrier reef in the bay of Fornells, carried out by Ports de les Illes Balears in collaboration with IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB), within the Active Restoration Project of the reef of the bay of Fornells, is now complete, through the planting of 3.200 Posidonia oceanica cuttings on a seabed surface of 2.160 m2.

Posidonia oceanica is a marine plant that grows only in the Mediterranean Sea, forming ecologically valuable meadows with a limited capacity for recovery. It is capable of forming barrier reefs with underwater formations similar to the coral reefs of tropical seas.

In the bay of Fornells there are these high-value Posidonia oceanica reefs which, in some cases, are in poor condition in the inner part near the coast.

This project will restore a degraded reef by improving the quality of the seabed.
