Es Babó and Sa Bassa Nova1 will be completed, while work continues on Sa Bassa Nova2

The Balearic Islands Government continues to make progress on the rehabilitation of the breakwaters and the improvement of the area surrounding the port of Portocolom, a strategic project for the recovery of maritime heritage and the waterfront. Today, the Director General of Ports and Maritime Transport, Antoni Mercant, and the Manager of Ports de les Illes Balears (Ports IB), Kico Villalonga, visited the works, accompanied by representatives from the Felanitx City Council: the Councilor for Tourism, Sports and Festivals, Toni Peña, and the Councilor for Portocolom, Melania Mesquida.

The actions are currently framed within phase I of the project, with significant progress in the different intervention areas.

At Es Babó, the rehabilitation of the seven docks is now complete, pending only the interior and exterior painting. The roofs and maritime works, including the piers and ramps, are expected to be finished during April, with only the superstructure remaining. The area is expected to be 100% complete by June, including the installation of doors and railings.

At Sa Bassa Nova 1, the 14 sluice gates have already been rehabilitated, pending only the final painting. The maritime work is completely finished. It is expected that the project will be 100% complete by June, with all construction elements finished.

The Sa Bassa Nova 2 project has been delayed due to various technical and weather-related circumstances. During the initial phases of the work, a greater degree of structural deterioration of the floor slabs than initially anticipated was detected, necessitating the demolition and reconstruction of a large portion of them. This situation forced the temporary suspension of work between November 13th and January 23rd while a revised project was drafted and approved, with the endorsement of the Servei de Patrimoni Històric (Historical Heritage Service) of the Consell de Mallorca (Island Council of Mallorca). Adding to the delays were the storms this winter, which hampered work in the port area.

Despite this, the interior floors are 100% complete, as are the repair and consolidation of walls, the consolidation of vaults, and the repair of concrete slabs. By June, the reconstruction of the floor slabs is expected to be 100% complete, and approximately 50% of the work on the escarpments, including the maritime structure, is anticipated.

This project involves a comprehensive intervention on one of Mallorca's most representative boatyard complexes, with the aim of preserving its historical value and adapting it to current safety, usage, and sustainability standards. The works are ongoing, utilizing traditional techniques and materials, respecting the original character of the structures and ensuring the protection of the marine and natural environment.
